Aptitude Day 284

Problems on Trains:   1. A train 50 m long is running at the speed of 36 km/hr. Find the time taken by it to pass a man standing near the railway line. Solution:                   Speed = 36*5/18                               = 10 m/s.                   Time = 50/10                             = 5 seconds. 2. A train is moving at a speed of 150 km/hr. If the length of the train is 90 m, how long will it take to cross a railway platform 110 m long? Solution:                  Speed = 150*5/18  '                           = 250/6 m/s.                  Length = 90+ 110                              = 200m                  Time = 200/(250/6)                            = 4(4/5) seconds.

Vocabulary Day 283

Abode Thesaurus: Noun :   place, apartment, building, dwelling, home, quarters, residence... Example sentences: ·             He lives in that abode . ·              She rented her adobe for her living.

Aptitude Day 283

Problems on Trains  Formulae: Time taken by a train of length ‘l’ meters to pass a pole or standing man = Time taken by the train to cover that same ’l‘ meters. Time taken by a train of length ‘l’ meters to pass a stationary object of length ‘a’ meters is the time taken by the train to cover ‘(l+ a)’ meters. If 2 trains are moving in the same direction, their relative speed should be their sum and the time taken by the 2 trains to cross each other = Sum of their lengths/ Relative speed. If they run in the opposite direction, their relative speed will be their difference and the time taken by the 2 trains to cross each other = Sum of their lengths/ Relative speed. If 2 trains start at the same time from points A and B towards each other and after crossing they take a and b seconds in reaching B and A respectively, then                                            (A’s speed): (B’s speed) = (b) 1/2 : (a) 1/2

Vocabulary Day 282

Elixir Thesaurus: Noun :   extract, remedy, medicine, potion, solution... Example sentences: ·             It's the best elixir for the snake. ·              Our professor taught about  elixir  for Malaria.

Aptitude Day 282

Answers of Day 281: 1. 135 km.                                      2. 7 times.           Problems on Time and Distance: 1. A salesman travels a distance of 20 km in 1 hour. How much faster in km/hr, on an average, must he travel to make such a trip in 3/5 hour less time? Solution:                   Required time = 1 -3/5[60] = 1- 36 = 24 minutes = 24/60 = 2/5 hours.                   Required speed = 20*5/2 = 50 km/hr.                   Original speed = 20/1 = 20 km/hr.                   Their difference = 50 – 20 = 30 km/hr. 2. A man has to cover a distance of 4 km in 1 hour. If he covers one-half of the distance in two-thirds of the total time; to cover the remaining distance in the remaining time, his speed must be: Solution:                 Remaining Distance = 2 km.                 Remaining Time = 1/3*[60] = 20 minutes = 1/3 hour.                 Required Speed = 2*3 = 6 km/hr.

Vocabulary Day 281

Foregoing Thesaurus: Adjective :   previous, former, past, precedent, prior... Antonyms : after, future... Example sentences: ·             The foregoing incident proves that he's an innocent.  ·              One must verify the foregoing principles before submitting the papers.

Aptitude Day 281

Problems to solve on Time and Distance:  1. With a uniform speed, a car covers the distance in 5 hours. Had the speed been increased by 3 km/hr, the same distance could have been covered in 4(1/2) hours. What’s the distance covered? 2. A and B walk around a circular track. They start at 9 AM from the same point in opposite directions. A and B walk at a speed of 3 rounds per hour and 2 rounds per hour respectively. How many times shall they cross each other before 10.30 AM?
