Aptitude Day 29

Problems on ages

1. A mother told her daughter, “I was as old as you are at present at the time of your birth.“ If the mother’s age is 38 years now, the daughter’s age 6 years back was:

Solution:
                Let the daughter’s present age be x.
                38-x = x  [As per the given statement]
                 38=2x
                 x = 19
                The daughter’s age 6 years back was x-6 = 19-6 = 13 years.

2. In 10 years, A will be twice as old as B was 10 years ago. If A is now 9 years older than B, the present age of B is:

Solution:
                  Let B’s present age be x and A’s present age be x+9 [Given]
                   In 10 years,
                                    (x+9)+10 = 2(x-10)
                                           x+19 = 2x-20
                                                  x=39
                 The present age of B is x which is 39 years.

3. A’s age is 1/6th of B’s age. B’s age will be twice of C’s age after 10 years. If C’s 8th birthday was celebrated 2 years ago, then what is A’s present age?

Solution:
                  C’s age after 10 years will be 8+2+10 = 20 years
                  So, B’s age after 10 years will be 40 years. [Since B’s age will be twice of C’s age]
                  B’s present age = 40-10 = 30 years.
                  A’s present age = 1/6th of B’s present age
                                               =1/6(30)
                                               = 5 years.
