A problem on Average:

The average age of students of a class is 12.5 years. The average age of boys in the class is 13.5 years and that of the girls is 12 years. The ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls in the class is:

Solution:
                  Let the ratio be s:1

                  s*13.5 + 1*12 = (s+1)12.5
                  13.5s +12 = 12.5s + 12.5
                  s = 0.5.

                 The ratio is s:1 which is 0.5:1 = 1/2 : 1 = 1:2
