Aptitude Day 274

Problems on Time and Distance:

1. A train when moves at an average speed of 20 km/hr, reaches its destination on time. When its average speed becomes 15 km/hr, then it reaches its destination 2 minutes late. Find the length of the journey.

Solution:
                  x/15 – x/20 = 2/60

                  By solving the above equation, we get
                  x = 2 km.

2. Leonard is travelling on his cycle and has calculated to reach point A at 2 P.M. If he travels at 5 km/hr; he will reach there at 12 noon if he travels at 7 km/hr. At what speed must he travel to reach A at 1 P.M.?

Solution:
                  x/5 – x/7 = 2

                  By solving this, we get
                  x = 35 km.

                 Time = 35/5 = 7 hours.

                 So, from this, we can say that he started 7 hours ago i.e., at 7 A.M.

                 Required speed = 35/6
                                           = 5(5/6) km/hr.
