1. A man’s speed with the current is 10 km/hr and the speed of the current is 1.5 km/hr. The man’s speed against the current is:
Solution:
His rate in still water = 10-1.5 = 12 km/hr.
His rate against the current = 8.5 -1.5 = 7 km/hr.
2. A boat can travel at a speed of 7 km/hr in still water. If the speed of the stream is 5 km/hr, find the time taken by the boat to go 96 km downstream.
Solution:
Speed of the downstream = 7+5 = 12 km/hr.
Time taken for 96 km downstream = 96/12 = 8 hours.
