1. A alone can do a piece of work in 5 days and B alone in 4 days. A and B undertook to do it for 5,000. With the help of C, they completed the work in 2 days. How much is to be paid to C?
Solution:
C’s 1 day’s work = 1/2 - (1/5+1/4) = 1/20.
Their ratio 1/5: 1/4: 1/20 = 4: 5: 1
Adding their ratio we get 10.
C’s share = (5,000)*1/10 = 500.
2. 40 men and 60 women can complete a work in 80 days, while 30 men and 70 women can complete it in 100 days. In how many days will 100 women complete it?
Solution:
Let their 1 day’s work be x and y.
40x+60y = 1/80 -------- Equation 1
30x+70y = 1/100 -------- Equation 2
By solving the above equations we get,
x = 11/40,000 and y = 1/40,000
100 women’s 1 day’s work = (100)*/40,000 =1/400.
They would complete in 400 days.
